Certification Systems at Klöckner Pentaplast
Whether its pharmaceuticals, packaging, labels or specialties, Klöckner Pentaplast customers are successful in all areas of the packaging industry and expect professional business partners. What unites them is their commitment to the quality and reliability of their partners – key requirements for their success.
Klöckner Pentaplast is committed to top-tier quality and takes the appropriate steps to achieve it. Throughout the world, the company’s various production sites meet internationally recognized standards. These standards facilitate cross-site and cross-border analysis and evaluation of production processes, for example, thereby enabling customers to put their trust in comparable systems. The systems ensure uniform processes and products, unlimited capacity and exceptional reliability in production and supplies.

To ensure top quality, all kp sites meet the requirements from the DIN EN ISO 9001 quality standard. These requirements for a quality management system set the conditions that enable the company to offer products and services with total reliability. They also help kp meet the requirements of the various authorities. It is crucial that the company’s products and services comply with all requirements in practice.
All 18 sites at Klöckner Pentaplast are certified to ISO 9001. Aspects such as management responsibility, management of resources and product development are clearly regulated. A further advantage is that Klöckner Pentaplast can harness capacity across plants more effectively and respond more flexibly to customer orders if standards are the same throughout the world.
The company focuses on product safety to eliminate any risks to end users and on reliability of supply to enable trustworthy production for kp customers and ensure undisrupted workflows.
Depending on the customer or region, it may be useful to obtain further certification. kp operates an integrated management system based on the ISO 9001 structure developed as a matrix in Europe. It takes into account the specific interests of the markets and the supporting and legal requirements. Examples include established specifications for compliance, occupational safety, hygiene, the environment, energy, conserving resources and ethical behavior in business dealings.
The British Retail Consortium (BRC) Global Standard for Packaging Materials sets what are recognized as the highest standards for product safety. The standards focus on a detailed risk analysis of the entire process chain (HACCP), control points, quality management and hygiene conditions for products, processes and employees. Customers in the foodstuffs industry expect the BRC requirements to also be met by companies that manufacture packaging. As Klöckner Pentaplast products are in direct contact with food, the specifications from the high hygiene risk category apply in all cases. The various kp sites in Europe that produce packaging for the food sector are BRC certified.
Safe Quality Food (SQF)
The kp site in Greenville, Ohio (United States) recently received the highest possible certification for food safety (Safe Quality Food, SQF) in the United States. SQF is a key indicator in retail businesses and restaurant chains for strictly and reliably monitored food safety. Certification to SQF Level 3 provides further support for using Klöckner Pentaplast to ensure quality, safety and reliability.
Each year, an independent organization tests the systems at Klöckner Pentaplast. In Europe, kp has opted for DQS, the certification body of the DGQ (German Society for Quality). As an accredited body, it audits all standards relevant to kp. These audits cover the requirements set out in standards. Customers also have individual demands that Klöckner Pentaplast needs to satisfy. Customers require transparent processes – they are therefore given the opportunity to see for themselves how their product is made. They find out how quality standards are reliably met, what materials Klöckner Pentaplast uses in production, how the company complies with hygiene regulations and how Klöckner Pentaplast complies with its own Code of Conduct. They check, evaluate, select and discuss with experts from Klöckner Pentaplast how individual requirements can be implemented.
Klöckner Pentaplast doesn’t just meet official standards to receive certification – the company also applies its own standards, which it uses to stand out from its competitors. This is demonstrated by numerous awards and honors that the various sites regularly receive. Examples include the Sindusfarma Quality Award for preferred/best supplier of packaging solutions and the EcoVadis rating that companies receive for commitment to corporate social responsibility. In the EcoVadis rating, global customers use an online sustainability portal to evaluate their suppliers according to four criteria. The focus is on environmental aspects, working conditions, fair business practices and sustainable purchasing. In 2014, Klöckner Pentaplast received the high silver ranking and with 54 points was around 30 percent above the average evaluation for participating companies. kp is also registered with Sedex, a platform that is mainly used by customers from the food industry. It is based on the four pillars of occupational health and safety, the environment, labor standards and business ethics.
Klöckner Pentaplast attaches great importance to safety and minimizing risk. The best demonstration of this is the HPR Award (Highly Protected Risk) for various plants in the kp organization presented by FM Global. FM Global is the world’s leading property insurer and very rarely presents this award for outstanding preventive risk minimization measures.
