Risk Management Systems at Klöckner Pentaplast
Klöckner Pentaplast believes that Food Safety, Health & Safety, Hygiene, Environmental, Quality and Energy issues can be managed, in the same way as other aspects of the Company’s activities; finance, sales, production etc. are managed. To help achieve this a Risk Management System has been established.
This Management System is designed to help us manage Consumer Safety, Health & Safety, Hygiene, Environmental, Quality and Energy issues in all our operations in a comprehensive manner and is applicable to the support functions, design, purchasing, manufacture, and distribution of flexibles, films, expanded polystyrene packaging and tableware, and solid wall plastic containers for the food packaging and catering industries, along with procurement and distribution of complementary goods for use in the food industry. It covers all aspects of the subjects giving information and direction to local managers, in all the areas that we as a Company wish to cover. The key objective is to achieve as high a standard as possible across all our sites.

All 32 sites at Klöckner Pentaplast are audited against our Risk Management systems which have been developed in line with industry best practices and form the backbone of our continuous improvement programme in Risk Management.

To ensure top quality, all kp sites meet the requirements from the ISO 9001 quality standard. These requirements for a quality management system set the conditions that enable the company to offer products and services with total reliability. All 32 sites at Klöckner Pentaplast are certified to ISO 9001. Aspects such as management responsibility, management of resources and product development are clearly regulated. A further advantage is that Klöckner Pentaplast can harness capacity across plants more effectively and respond more flexibly to customer orders if standards are the same throughout the world.
The company focuses on product safety to eliminate any risks to end users and on reliability of supply to enable trustworthy production for kp customers and ensure undisrupted workflows.
Depending on the customer or region, it may be useful to obtain further certification. Examples include established specifications for compliance, occupational safety, hygiene, the environment, energy, conserving resources and ethical behaviour in business dealings.

Product Safety - British Retail Consortium (BRC)
The BRC Global Standard for Packaging Materials sets what are recognized as the highest standards for product safety. The standards focus on a detailed risk analysis of the entire process chain (HACCP), control points, quality management and hygiene conditions for products, processes and employees. Customers in the foodstuffs industry expect BRC requirements to also be met by companies that manufacture packaging. As Klöckner Pentaplast products are in direct contact with food, the specifications from the high hygiene risk category apply in all cases. The kp sites in Europe that produce packaging for the food sector are BRC certified.
Product Safety - Safe Quality Food (SQF)
As with the BRC Standards, the SQF standards focus on a detailed risk analysis of the entire process chain (HACCP), control points, quality management and hygiene conditions for products, processes and employees. Customers in the foodstuffs industry expect SQF requirements to also be met by companies that manufacture packaging. As Klöckner Pentaplast products are in direct contact with food, the specifications from the high hygiene risk category apply in all cases. SQF is a key indicator in retail businesses and restaurant chains for strictly and reliably monitored food safety. Certification to SQF Level 3 provides further support for using Klöckner Pentaplast to ensure quality, safety and reliability. The kp sites in North America that produce packaging for the food sector are either SQF certified or working towards this level of certification.
Each year, an independent organization audits the systems at Klöckner Pentaplast. As an accredited body, it audits all standards relevant to kp. These audits cover the requirements set out in standards. Customers also have individual demands that Klöckner Pentaplast needs to satisfy. Customers require transparent processes – they are therefore given the opportunity to see for themselves how their product is made. They find out how quality standards are reliably met, what materials Klöckner Pentaplast uses in production, how the company complies with hygiene regulations and how Klöckner Pentaplast complies with its own Code of Conduct. They check, evaluate, select and discuss with experts from Klöckner Pentaplast how individual requirements can be implemented.
Klöckner Pentaplast doesn’t just meet official standards to receive certification – the company also applies its own standards, which it uses to stand out from its competitors. This is demonstrated by numerous awards and honours that the various sites regularly receive.
Examples include the Sindusfarma Quality Award for preferred/best supplier of packaging solutions and the EcoVadis rating that companies receive for commitment to corporate social responsibility. In the EcoVadis rating, global customers use an online sustainability portal to evaluate their suppliers according to four criteria. The focus is on environmental aspects, working conditions, fair business practices and sustainable purchasing.
kp is also registered with Sedex, a platform that is mainly used by customers from the food industry. It is based on the four pillars of occupational health and safety, the environment, labour standards and business ethics.
